INTRO TO KAYAK

This introductory lesson is designed for first-time paddlers looking to get the basics of kayaking in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. The perfect course for those unsure if paddling is a sport they intend to pursue further, or for those simply curious to dispel some of the popular myths about kayaking (no, you don’t need to know how to Eskimo roll to enjoy kayaking !) Kayaks are harder to flip over than you think, we guarantee it !

Join us for a 2 hour “kayak primer” on Saturday mornings from 9:30 am to11:30 am. We’ll cover the basics of kayak types and necessary safety gear, terminology, and optional gear and gadgets, followed by approximately an hour of on-water time to give you a feel for recreational kayaking in shallow, sheltered waters in one of our stable, comfortable kayaks. You will learn and practice a variety of paddle strokes including the forward stroke, reverse stroke, sweep strokes, draws, and you will be introduced to the low brace.

This course is a prerequisite to our Intro to Rescue course, as well as any intermediate to advanced level paddling tours.

Most Saturday mornings from May 1 to October 2
9:30 AM to 11:30 AM
Please check our calendar for specific dates.
Cost : $ 35.00 per person, plus taxes.

INTRO TO SKILLS

Have you taken “Intro to Kayak” but you don’t feel ready for “Intro to Rescue”? Are you looking for a couple of hours to review your forward stroke and try a variety of other strokes, bracing, towing? This is the class for you!

Due to our busy schedule this season, this class is tentatively being offered on Sundays.

July 4, 11, 25 August 1 & 8
Cost: $45 per person, plus taxes.

INTRO TO RESCUE

The next step after Introduction to Kayaking !

Would you know what to do if your kayak capsized accidentally ?

Here’s your opportunity to learn rescue techniques in a controlled environment.
We’ll start with the wet exit, and teach you a variety of assisted and solo rescues that will get you back into your kayak and on your way.

Topics covered will include :

  • Wet exit
  • Capsize prevention included low and high bracing
  • Assisted Rescues : T-rescue, Eskimo bow rescue
  • Self-rescue with paddle float
  • Contact tow
  • Review of recommended safety gear

Meet at Grand River Kayak at 1:00 for registration and equipment fitting, then follow us to the beach. Expect to be on the water for approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. This course combined with our Intro to Kayaking will give you the necessary skills to be a safe and confident paddler in calm, sheltered conditions.

Please note that our Intro to Kayaking course (or equivalent experience) is a prerequisite to this course. Both courses are required for anyone wishing to participate in any intermediate to advanced kayak tours.

Alternate Saturdays from May 8 to October 2nd
1:30 PM to 4:30 PM
Please check our calendar for specific dates.
Cost : $ 60.00 per person plus taxes

Kayak Surfing is for YOU!

Kayak Surfing combines the best of sea kayaking with the moving water and thrill of whitewater.

When the wind is right and the waves are up on Lake Erie (which is most of the summer, let’s face it) we will teach you the basics of riding a wave in a sea kayak. We’ll also cover safety and rescue techniques for rough water paddling, all in the safety of shallow water, close to shore.

This course REQUIRES learning the wet exit, so prepare to get wet !

Weather dependent! No wind, no waves, no surf!
