Paddle Canada Sea Kayak Skills Level 1 provides the skill and knowledge necessary for day-long sea kayaking trips in sheltered waters (non-wilderness areas). Successful completion of Level 1 indicates competence to paddle a sea kayak within a sheltered bay in the company of one or more paddlers with Level 1 or greater skill and knowledge.

The first day of this course will involve planning a kayaking day trip on Lake Erie. The second day of the course will be the execution of the day trip as planned, with additional sea kayak handling and rescue skills to be taught during the trip.

Rescue skills

  • Bow rescue
  • Unassisted re-entry
  • Assisted re-entry
  • Towing
  • Communication/signals

Paddling skills

  • Forward stroke
  • Brace low/high
  • Sweep
  • Draw
  • Stern rudder
  • Edge control

Prerequisites: Paddle Canada
Introduction to Sea Kayaking Skills certification or equivalent skill and knowledge.

Theory and skills review taught on site at Grand River kayak with practical portion spent on Lake Erie.
